Why choose AOGP?

AOGP strives to maintain an innovative, high quality yet adaptive General Practice Training program which reflects the needs of our Registrars, Supervisors/Trainers and the regional community. At all times our aim is to provide the necessary educational expertise to ensure the program provides an exciting, diverse and inspiring education experience that creates confident and competent General Practitioners who are a dynamic and passionate force in primary health.

AOGP requires Registrars to be active partners throughout their training program. AOGP will ensure Registrars have the maximum opportunity to become the General Practitioner they aspire to be.

AOGP works to three key principles in the delivery of its training program:

Principle 1: Customised

From the point of a Registrar’s acceptance into the AOGP training program, AOGP is focused on helping them design a customised Training Blueprint that they will work to complete over the course of their program. The blueprint design will recognise the skills, knowledge, attitudes and experience a Registrar brings with them into the program whilst simultaneously identifying the skills, knowledge, attitudes and experience they want and need to develop during the life of their program. This above work is achieved whilst also reconciling the Registrar’s Training Blueprint to the relevant College/s’ curriculum requirements and training standards, and the program guidelines presented by the Commonwealth, via GPET.

Principle 2: Personalised

AOGP prides itself on being people-oriented. The team at AOGP works hard to ensure that it uses a variety of communication methods to suit individual Registrar needs. Streamlined systems and processes underpin this personal focus to allow for easy and transparent access to all training and education options specified in the Registrar’s Training Blueprint. This includes, wherever possible, access to family-friendly training arrangements.

Principle 3: Specialised

From the outset in 2002, AOGP was developed with a clear goal to create General Practitioners who are both specialists in primary care as well as a passionate and dynamic force in community-based medicine. Registrars will be trained with the aim of attaining a specialist qualification, either as an FRACGP and/or a FACRRM.

These three key principles inform the manner in which AOGP delivers training to Registrars across the whole of its geographical area.

The following information highlights the aspects of training that are unique to AOGP. No other RTP delivers their training program quite like us!

Flexible and Registrar directed

AOGP is focused on helping Registrars design a customised training blueprint that they will work to complete over the course of their program.

More information about the training blueprint can be found on the AOGP Training Opportunities and Blueprint Page.

Innovative in the delivery of education

Learning Needs Analysis
The Learning Needs Analysis (LNA) process forms a critical part of a Registrar’s learning cycle, because it provides the opportunity—at an early point in the Registrar’s training—to explore a number of key learning areas.

These include:  consultation skills competence, procedural skills, confidence, previous experience/preparedness for General Practice,   clinical knowledge, communication and language skills.

All AOGP Registrars will complete the four-step LNA process in order to help AOGP identify individual and group learning needs and then customise in-Practice training and out-of-Practice training as appropriate.

Identified needs are also expected to be addressed as part of self-directed learning.

Video Consults
In order for Medical Educators and Supervisors to form a holistic opinion of a Registrar’s performance, Registrars are asked to videotape consultations. These recorded consultations provide an opportunity for supported Registrar self-reflection on their consultation skills, which is not possible through any other medium.

Toolboxes
The toolboxes are a series of stand-alone teaching modules. They have been developed by Medical Educators and Supervisors to enhance in-practice teaching and learning opportunities for Registrars and teaching opportunities for Supervisors and Medical Educators.

  • Red Toolbox: Supervisor Module
  • Orange Toolbox: GetSMART Topics
  • Green Toolbox: Core Tutorial Package
  • Blue Toolbox: The Business of General Practice (2010 GPET Innovation Award winner)

Virtual Study Groups (VSG)
For those Registrars preparing for their summative assessments, VSGs are facilitated by two experienced rural General Practitioners. The VSG provides rural pathway and general pathway Registrars undertaking their rural term, an opportunity to engage in regular online study opportunities facilitated by AOGP.

You can find out more about online learning initiatives on the Online Learning page.

Family friendly

Families are important to AOGP. With increasing numbers of women in medicine, and fathers taking a more active parenting role, AOGP acknowledges that increased support for families will improve their training experience.

AOGP offers flexible training options that take family responsibilities into account. Our on-site child-care facilities enable Registrars with young children-who do not have support-to attend out-of-practice education.

Responsive to key stakeholders such as Registrars, Supervisors/Trainers, colleges and others in the region

AOGP has an established Liaison Officer role for each core stakeholder group that is currently involved in Registrar training. These representatives provide a direct communication link between AOGP and they key parties, namely Registrars, Supervisors and Practice Managers. Similarly, the Community Stakeholder Reference Group (CSRG) is made up of community based representatives drawn from key regional stakeholder groups located within the AOGP region. More information about the CSRG can be found under About AOGP - Board
