Registrar Wellbeing

AOGP places a high value on Registrar wellbeing. To this end AOGP has developed a coordinated self-care and support program for Registrars, consisting of Pastoral Care, a Self-Management training program (SMP-GPR) and a Registrar Assistance Program.

Pastoral care

The term ‘pastoral care’ relates to the way in which we support our Registrars to create constructive and valuable experiences in their training lives. Registrars are allocated a pastoral care Medical Educator from the AOGP Medical Education Team who will maintain regular contact with the Registrar throughout their training program. Pastoral care ensures that training is not separated from Registrars’ personal experiences, their relationships, or their work environments. It takes a person-centred approach which is ‘possibility-oriented’, rather than ‘problem-oriented’. It focuses on guiding, supporting and empowering Registrars to their full potential, and complements the education and training that they receive.

Self-management Program for GP Registrars (SMP-GPR)

All Registrars participate in the Self-Management Program for GP Registrars (SMP-GPR). This program is integrated into out-of-Practice training and staged across the three years of training. It assists Registrars to build a set of skills to manage their work and life, help build resilience and minimise associated stress.
