Description of region
Historic railway town .

Located 253 km north of Adelaide on the western edge of the Flinders Ranges, Peterborough is a railway town. One of its claims to fame is that it is one of only two places in Australia (the other is Gladstone) where three railway gauges met. This particular absurdity was the result of different state governments being unable (or unwilling) to agree on a standard railway gauge.

Regional Highlights

  • Peterborough Art & Cultural Festival
    15 - 25 April 2011
The 8th Art Prize Exhibition of artwork and photography with entries from around Australia. Presented in the largest and most ornate Town Hall in Country SA.
  • The Indian Pacific Transcontinental Passenger train passes through Peterborough four times a week. The train started official operations in 1970 and links Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. It is the only train that stops in the town, and that is only to pick up or drop off passengers. It can be seen at approximately 1:30pm on Tuesdays & Fridays and 11:30am on Thursdays & Sundays. These times may vary and be altered at short notice.
  • Just under half an hours drive North West of Peterborough is the town of Orroroo. At Orroroo why not venture to the top of Tank Hill Lookout to get a panoramic view of the town and surrounding area. You can see the State's largest River Red Gum Tree in Pekina Creek and also an old railway bridge which was constructed in 1882 using hand rivets.
