Improving fluency
Practise: Listening to the rhythms

Rhythms of sentences vary in different varieties of English. Compare the following examples. Don’t worry about the words themselves – just listen to the rhythms of the sentence as if it was a piece of music. Think about how the pitch rises and falls through the sentence. And listen to where the beats of the sentence occur. Can you hear that there are differences?
